As stewards of philanthropic legacy of Mary Moody Northen Endowment, the Endowment board supports causes near and dear to her heart through out her life time. Including but not limited to environmental, social services, educational and projects benefiting the people of Galveston County Texas and Giles County Virginia.

History

Galveston businesswoman and philanthropist Mary Moody Northen established her foundation in 1964. Mary was the daughter of William Lewis Moody, Jr. and Libby Rice Shearn Moody of Galveston, Texas. After her father died in 1954, she assumed leadership of more than 50 family companies, and guided their growth for more three decades until her death in 1986.

Under her leadership, she directed American National Insurance Company, Moody National Bank, Mountain Lake Lodge plus a large number of hotel and ranching operations around the country. She was the founding chair of The Moody Foundation. The Moody Foundation was formed by her mother and father and has become one of the largest philanthropic foundations in the great state of Texas. Mary Moody Northen was featured on the cover of Newsweek Magazine and was referred to her “The First Lady of Finance.”
